Babies are particularly vulnerable to indoor air pollution because of their weakened immune systems. Children under 24 months of age spend most of their time in their rooms. Constant exposure to pollutants can cause health problems such as eye, nose and throat infections, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and even asthma. So, it's necessary to have an air quality monitor for your baby's bedroom, so that you can get the air quality details and take actions to solve the pollution ASAP.
Fortunately, parents can take steps to protect their children from indoor pollutants:
1. Choose the best bedding for your baby
The purpose of bedding is not only to keep babies warm, but also to protect them from air pollutants such as dust, pollen and mold. Therefore, we recommend that you choose a latex foam mattress over a fiber mattress. Always use organic mulch to limit dust mites in the room to prevent newborns from breathing during sleep. Use a chemical odorless cleaner to clean the covers to prevent cleaner-related fumes from irritating the baby's neck. Cleaning these covers with hot water is the best way to get rid of any ticks.
Besides tick, dust, pollen, dandruff and mold also fall into the air when you clean your sheets every day. These air pollutants can cause serious health problems, such as asthma and bronchitis. Low-allergenic bedding can be used to reduce these pollutants and improve air quality in children's rooms.
Clean the air inside
One of the best ways to reduce indoor air pollution is to install an air purifier in your baby's room. The market is full of air purifiers. You can choose according to your own requirements and budget. However, make sure they are made from HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters, as they are the most efficient. You can remove 99.97% particles larger than 0.3 micron in diameter.
However, please test the air quality in your room before installing an air purifier. If you don't have a budget, you can buy an indoor air quality monitor. Air samples can be collected and sent to the laboratory for testing. Usually, you can receive the results by email within a few weeks.
3. Avoid toxic colors
Did you know that wall paints and varnishes release toxic chemicals? These chemicals are just large amounts of volatile organic compounds (vocs) that can be harmful to health in the short and long term. Vocs not only cause health problems, but also pose a serious threat to the environment. However, due to strict environmental regulations, colors with low or no VOC content can appear. Be sure to buy VOC free coatings to avoid breathing in toxic fumes while your child is sleeping.
Vocs are also found in aerosol sprays, detergents, disinfectants, insect repellents and even fragrances. So the next time you shop, stick to products labeled "VOC free" or with organic ingredients.
4. Reduce your pet's dandruff
Pets can remove dead skin cells and hair (or feathers). This can affect the health of your baby's lungs and sinuses. Regular grooming can reduce the spread of dandruff, but it can't prevent the pet from falling off completely. Regular cleaning of bedding in and out of children's rooms can also limit the spread of dandruff.
Keeping pets out of the baby's room may not be enough because dandruff floats in the air. It can also be found in areas where pets are not allowed. Luckily, the HEPA filter can catch pet dander and keep it out of the pet's room. My advice is to install a HEPA filter at home whenever possible.
5. Manage indoor air humidity
High humidity not only makes the air heavy and difficult to breathe, but also leads to the growth of harmful fungi, yeasts and bacteria. Indoor air humidity varies with location. However, it should always be 30-50%, with an ideal value of about 45%.
Use a hygrometer to measure humidity in the nursery. There are two ways to reduce the humidity in a room. Install an exhaust fan in a room with high humidity (which can be expensive) or a relatively inexpensive dehumidifier in a child's room. However, the dehumidifier must be cleaned daily to ensure that it is in good condition.
