3 Ways To Render Your HVAC System More Sustainable

More ideas to update your house’s systems while at home socially distancing.

We live in a world where an an increased focus is placed on sustainable living in a bid to preserve our precious natural resources and reduce wasteful spending. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are responsible for up to 47% of the energy use of a typical American.

In order to make our homes as sustainable as possible, we need to ensure that the way we heat and cool our houses not only saves us money but has a limited impact on the environment as well. There are a number of things that can render HVAC use more sustainable.

Programmable thermostats can save a lot of money

If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, you should definitely consider getting one, as it can boost sustainability in a number of ways. The less work an HVAC system has to do to maintain a cozy temperature, the more money you will save. A programmable thermostat will enable you to turn HVAC off when no one is at home and there is no need for the temperature to be maintained. Smart thermostats that connect with smartphones and tablets will even allow a homeowner to adjust their HVAC systems remotely. Apart from allowing you to control the temperatures and operational times, a smart thermostat can also monitor energy consumption and issue maintenance reminders.

HVAC filters need to be changed frequently

When your HVAC filters are dirty, the airflow becomes severely restricted, and the system has to work increasingly hard to maintain a comfortable temperature. This not only results in increased energy consumption and costs, but it makes for higher levels of indoor air pollution as well. For this reason, HVAC filters need to be replaced on a regular basis. It is essential to pay close attention to the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating of a filter. A higher MERV equates to an increased level of protection. A mid to lower rating of between 8 and 13 is considered ideal for home HVAC systems.

Schedule regular system maintenance

One of the simplest ways to make an HVAC system more sustainable is to be proactive as far as system maintenance is concerned. A heating or cooling system that is not regularly maintained will use more energy while performing subpar. Ideally, a home HVAC system should be serviced once a year by a reputable service company. Regular HVAC maintenance can reduce the risk of breakdown by as much as 95%. Additionally, it will also prevent indoor air pollution from getting out of hand, while decreasing maintenance and repair costs by as much as 40%.

HVAC systems are among the most energy-intensive systems in a home, and can also increase a household’s carbon footprint considerably. Thankfully, the above guidelines will make it increasingly easy to render your HVAC system more sustainable.
